Workshop Challenge 6

Black and White to Colour

For this workshop challenge members were given a black and white picture of The Mermaid of the North and invited to paint or draw this using whatever colours and techniques they thought applicable. The aim was to challenge people to think carefully about the colours they used and to consider experimenting with the style of their output.

This is the picture they were given to draw and paint but they did not see the colour photo until the end of the workshop.

This is a beautiful statue which is located on a beach in Balintore, Scotland. Created by Steve Hayward in 2007, the 10’ bronzed wood mermaid statue has been placed so that her tail is covered by water at high tide.

Below is a selection of members’ in-progress paintings and drawings.
